Barf Happens

Let’s start out by me saying, hello.  Remember me?  I’m that lady that used to make you laugh or cry a couple times a week.  Lately I have been a bit quiet…. let me tell you why.

As I hope you remember I am pregnant again with another one of James’ love goblins, and let me tell you this one is giving me a run for my money.  I am almost half way and it has felt like an eternity.  I have been sick pretty much the entire time with what they call “morning sickness” which I can assure you is not confined to the early hours of the day.  It has an amazing ability to make you lose your lunch or dinner just as much as your breakfast.  On top of this fabulous condition we also had a very nasty bout of the flu.  I am renaming this year’s strain “The Black Death”.  Two weeks ago Little Chef barfed the contents of his breakfast all over me, and that my friends was the beginning of the end.  Next to get hit were James and I.  At the same time.  In a one bathroom house.  I assure you I would have sold my actual soul for a second bathroom or a swift death that night.  Thankfully I was not able to negotiate either and I survived.  Two days later my beautiful sister and her husband jetted off on a much deserved week long vacation and we moved in to their house to look after Little Chef’s cousins.  Yes, you guessed it.  Toddler flu times two.  Barf in car seats, and beds, and toy boxes, and shoes…    At one point Jaxon who is 3 looked at James and said “I think I farted poop.”  Yes folks, he was correct.  He had farted all sorts of poop.  When you decide to marry someone and spend your entire life with them, just picture yourself at 2:00 AM mopping up barf beside them.  If you think that sounds like something you both would enjoy then you really have something special.

Needless to say I have had a theme the past 4.5 months.  And it has been rough.  So rough indeed I ended up spending 6 hours in emergency getting pumped full of fluids and gravol yesterday.  I am still down 10 lb from my pre-pregnancy weight and have yet to have a 3 days stretch without losing one meal or another.  It’s getting mega old.  And that my friends is why the delicious food posts have been few and far between lately.  But I feel like I am possibly on the mend.

They sent me home from the hospital with instructions to drink plenty of gatorade to bring my hydration back up.  But have you ever tasted that stuff?  It’s awful.  So gross.  I just can’t.  So I looked up some electrolyte recipes online and decided to make my own.

After an eventful trip to Safeway {soon they will just ban me from that store} where Little Chef decided to make a scene right out the door of the fire truck cart I had to battle another mom for.  He was happily hooting and hollering until he saw the ‘oh so tempting’ chips display and decided to bail out of the moving cart with all of his might directly on to his head and then wail like he had been shot.  The woman behind me actually screamed.  It was so special.  I hauled him off the floor {he was not hurt at all} and he kicked and screamed and acted like I was the meanest most abusive parent out there.  And boy did that lady believe him.  She tutted at me in serious disapproval and then actually snorted when she saw my pregnant belly.  As if she was truly appalled that such a negligent parent was going to be in charge of not one but two whole human beings shortly.  Thanks lady.

But I did manage through the drama to pick up the ingredients for my electrolyte-for-suffering-preggos drink mix.  Here is the recipe for anyone else suffering like I am!

Heave-Ho Pregnancy Electrolyte Drink

2 Tablespoons natural honey

2 Red Raspberry Leaf teabags

3 Lemons

1 Teaspoon salt

Water

Heat up 4 cups of water and steep the tea bags in it.  Mix in the honey and salt until it is dissolved.  Mix in the juice of the lemons.  You can also add the zest of the lemons for more lemon flavour.  Let cool.  Pour over ice and drink.

Best served while soaking in a lovely bubble bath or while binge watching “Call the Midwife” on Netflix.
